Caprice

March 26, 2009

Back in February a friend shared this with me and although I can’t say I finished reading Eat, Pray, Love, this speech titled “A different way to think of creative genius” made by Elizabeth Gilbert at the TED talks resonates:

I work with a lot of entrepreneurs, many who are artists, some who are writers, many whose art is their entrepreneurship, creating businesses from inspiration, ideas from where?  Capriciousness.  When steady work pays off and suddenly the idea takes flight.  Capriciousness.  When steady work is applied and nothing budges.  No call backs. No customers. No forward momentum. Capriciousness when again it ignites.

Or a more simple explanation of the state of your next masterpiece, your business, your career, or even the economy, a vague recollection of a piece of a song from my childhood:  “When you’re up you’re up.  And when you’re down, you’re down.  And when you’re only halfway up, you’re neither up nor down.”
